Choose 5 new words from your vocabulary bookmark. Record each word, its page number, and a prediction on your paper. Then, look up each word in the dictionary and record the definition. Discussion State your vocabulary word. Read the sentence from the book and then ask for predictions from your group. Once predictions have been shared, explain to your group what the word really means. Also tell your group why you chose this word. Repeat for all 5-vocabulary words. |

Create 3 interesting discussion questions. Try to think of questions that will get your circle group to dig into the book and share their thoughts and opinions. Use the question stems for guidance. Remember to write a response to each of your questions! Use complete sentences. Discussion Ask each or your questions (one at a time) to your group. Allow time for discussion and be sure everyone has the opportunity to share at least once. After you discuss with your team, everyone will choose to answer in their notebook. |
IllustratorAssignment
Draw a picture of something that's specifically in the text, something the reading reminded you of, or a picture that conveys an idea or feeling you got from the text. Use colored pencils to draw a sketch, cartoon, diagram, or recreate an illustration that is in the text. Write at least 15 descriptive words from the story on the outside border of your picture that describes the event in your picture. Discussion Present your images to the group and get them to speculate about what it means, connecting the drawing to their own ideas. Then tell them what it means to you. |

Your job is to get to know and understand the characters in the text. Describe their personalities--how they act, how they feel, what they think. Use evidence from the text to support your choices. Remember to site the page number in which you found your evidence. Are they like you or anyone you know (text-self)? Discussion Present your character analysis to your group. Explain why you chose the specific action, thought, and feeling to describe your character. Ask your group if they have any other actions, thoughts, or feelings that also describe your character well. |

You can read the passage yourself or ask someone else to do so. Have the group discuss the passage after you've read it. Then share with the group why you chose this passage. |
